The process by which an external entity examines and checks the effectiveness of an installed management system, taking as its basis the degree of compliance with a standard, is known as certification. This examination is carried out by means of an audit which results in a report which, if positive, allows the certifying body to grant a certificate which is valid for 3 years. It is useful for the company to be certified in order to prove to third parties that it complies with standards, but this should not be seen as the end of the quality assurance process but rather the next step towards achieving the quality objectives the company has set itself.
